HEALTH bosses believe the number of people seeking help for gender
identity disorders at a Newton Abbot clinic is set to rise.

The South West's only gender identity clinic, currently based at
Newton Abbot Hospital, has seen 50 new cases in just six months this
year. Just under half of those referred end up having surgery.

Last year the clinic dealt with a total of 62 referrals for a 12-month period.

Clinic managers at The Laurels say people are more aware of the issue
and it is becoming more socially acceptable. They plan to expand and
offer support services to under 18s in the near future.
