No letter on Friday, or Monday, or today. I know it's official. My mother has cut me off.

Three weeks ago, I told her my legal name. I wrote that she might never use it, but that she should know what it is, for legal reasons if for no other. A week ago, a letter arrived from my mother that said that for her, my male self no longer existed, and that she did not know "this female person who is living with" my spouse.

It was a crushing blow, no less so because I always knew it was a possibility. I took very cold comfort in the fact that she referred to me as this female person.
