For those of you who wanted Obama to make a public statement on the air, he's done it and there's no doubt about where he stands.

MTV will air a candid conversation with the Dem candidate tomorrow on its special "Ask Obama" at 9AM and 7PM ET. He directly addresses Prop 8 again, and gives his now-familiar nonsensical view of marriage equality in light of the fact that he supports all the rights of marriage but calls them civil unions.

When an MTV viewer wanted to know what Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama thought of Proposition 8, a state constitutional amendment on the 2008 California general-election ballot that would eliminate the right of same-sex couples to marry, MTV News brought the question straight to the man himself.

He's got nothing to lose by coming out now.  He should have done it months ago.

He's been doing it since the primaries; remember the LOGO thing with Joe Solmonese et al? He's always said that same-sex marriage would not be achievable, but that he wants to have really robust civil unions.

But Prop 8 is not a civil union deal.  Its flat out marriage.

About bloody time you people joined the civilized countries and allowed gay marriage. You need to get out the normal person vote and not let the fundies run away with this one imo.

He thinks it's not just useless overkill but a dangerous precedent of a US constitution limiting and not expanding rights. I think it was in a SoVo interview that he said that same-sex marriage was impossible given the current supreme court and that he wanted to work on giving strong rights to same-sex couples. He doesn't seem to be against it if it was doable.

Well, I think that in the end its going to come down (pretty much as the Civil War did) to the issue of comity.
