Human Rights Campaign Weekly Message for November 21

Joe Solmonese
11/21/2008

This week we observed Transgender Day of Remembrance, which provided us with a moment to stop and consider just how much this community has to fight for.  Transgender members of our community are unsafe, preyed upon by ignorance and hatred. The fight for marriage equality and relationship recognition is crucially important, but until all of us can walk the streets without fear of violence, none of us are protected.

I am not moved at all by the HRC's so called concern for the transgender community.  They are still empty words from a traitor to our plight, Joe Solomese, who was perfectly happy to throw the trans community under the bus when we were perceived to be obstacles preventing him and his kind and his most influential constituency: white, male, wealthy gay men, from getting what they wanted.  From all that I have seen since then the HRC has done nothing substantive to prove that they have changed their ways.  I'm convinced they are still not really ready to include us in actuality.  Only in their rhetoric, talk is cheap after all, do they support us.

There's a blog entry in the Bilerico Project that says it well but I wont link to it because of its strong language.  I do however completely agree with Serena Freewomyn's sentiment.

I posted this yesterday here https://www.susans.org/forums/index.php/topic,49879.0.html, it's well worth reading, despite strong language. I also agree w/ Serena.

One small paragraph about TDOR, and the rest about gay/lesbian rights.  Seriously, was it worth including?  Looked almost like an afterthought"
Joe Solomese is lightning rod for trans anger and he knows it.  I'm just guessing, but I think that is why he linked to Allyson Robinson's speech instead of writing about TDOR himself.  Given the unhappiness many have expressed about HRC involvement in TDOR events, he may have made the right decision.
