Gender is an often misunderstood concept. Most people equate it with sex,1 even using the two interchangeably. However, that is not the definition of gender. To fully understand the concept of gender, one must first look at all of the factors of gender. We have gender roles, physical gender, gender expression, gender presentation, gender identity, and gender preference.
Gender roles are the prescribed set of rules in reference to ones perceived sex. They generally determine how one should act, what career path they should pursue, and what other traits they should exhibit. For example, take the traditional male gender roles. A man following these would likely have a physically demanding job (i.e. construction worker, military man, ect) or a position of extreme power (CEO, business man, ect).
