QuoteEditor's note: The editorial attempted to acknowledge the significance of issues concerning the transgender community by noting, "Republicans made clear that no similar progress should be expected on marriage equality or transgender rights."
I fail to see how this addressed my question. What the Republicans in the Senate did in the past has no bearing on my concern that trans people have again been thrown under the bus by New York State's LGB community, just as we were in 2003 when SONDA, the Sexual Orientation Nondiscrimination Act, was passed without trans inclusion. This in particular worries me:
QuoteAnd a memo from the progressive faction to Smith's top operatives now makes clear that the group aims to memorialize in writing what was discussed at the meeting. Marriage equality is on the list, just as the minimum wage, tenant protections, family leave, budget fairness, and campaign finance reform are.
Our issues are NOT in this list!
I hope the other members here who are New York State residents will take the time to write to your state senators to tell them about our issues and concerns. That, and if you can possible find the resources to do so, come to Albany on Equality and Justice Day (April 28, 2009) to tell them personally what we need them to do for us. Also, I hope that you contact your local LBGT organizations as well as ESPA to tell them your rights to decent housing and jobs is more critical than their chance to get married.
