Why Now?

It's the first question the chief psychiatrist asked me. Ditto for my therapist.

"Why did you wait till midlife to transition?"

The short answer: the option was not available to me until then. I couldn't before. Now, I can.

You'll hear the same sort of answer from a lot of middle-age transitioning folks. The resources weren't available for us back in the days when a gallon of gas cost 19 cents and the Beatles were singing All You Need Is Love. There were no options whatsoever. It was only in later years, when many of life's responsibilities had been fulfilled, that the option became available.

The next question was not as simple, but I knew the answer.

"Can't you just stay the way you are and live a transgender lifestyle?"
"Be yourself; everyone else is already taken." Oscar Wilde
