Have FTM Transsexuals Always Existed?

That's the question that A.H. Devon* opens FTM with, quickly noting that this question is impossible to answer.  He does, however, survey Western culture from the ancient Greeks and early Christian church to the twentieth century, in search of some clues. The difficulty in this kind of retrospective quest is that we don't know how female-bodied individuals who dressed and lived as men felt about their actions. What prompted them? What would they have done, given different circumstances?
