Fairbanks School board approves change to discrimination policyBut board member Kristina Brophy raised the issue of whether anyone would be willing to drop any other category, such as gender or race, from the policy to simplify the language.
"My goal is that every student in our district could come to school and not feel invisible because someone recognizes them for who they are," Brophy said. "It's really important to give people a voice, and through this policy, we say we value you and we recognize you."
Brophy, along with board president Leslie Hajdukovich, and board member Sean Rice, voted in support of the revised policy.
"When I did become a member of this board, I took an oath to give every child in this community an education that was safe and harassment free," Rice said.
