Study: Trans students victimized

A new study finds transgender youths face extremely high levels of victimization in school - even more so than their lesbian, gay and bisexual peers.


But the study, by the Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network, also found they are more likely to speak out about LGBT issues in the classroom.

Called "Harsh Realities: The Experiences of Transgender Youth in Our Nation's Schools," ( http://www.glsen.org/cgi-bin/iowa/all/news/record/2388.html )  it is the first comprehensive study on transgender students.

Nearly nine out of 10 transgender students experienced verbal harassment at school in the past year because of their sexual orientation and gender expression, more than half experienced physical harassment because of their sexual orientation and gender expression and more than a quarter experienced physical assault because of their sexual orientation and gender expression.

Why the Hel do these trolls always use "go and see a psychiatrist" as a brush-off?  For one thing: anyone who transitions is going to have seen any number of medical professionals, including psychiatrists.  Do they really think that transitioning is like getting a tattoo or something--you just walk into a clinic with a note from your mum?

For another thing: I'm sick to death of "you are mentally ill" being used to dismiss people's prespectives.

When I was in high school I was very closeted and would try to fit in as a boy. Going out for sports etc.But many people would notice my fem. persona and appearance. (even though I was trying to act like boy) I had to deal with verbal and physical abuses quite often. Two boys even tried to rape me in the locker room showers. Luckily the coach was watching. They didn't get in much trouble and I was eventually "excused" from P.E. all together.
