Dungeons and Dragons!

Geek? Maybe.  Nerd? Most likely.  Still, just out of curiousity does anyone on these boards have even the remotest interest in this wonderful RPG?

I started playing D&D back in the dark ages when it was still owned by TSR in Madison, Wisconsin. When Wizards of the Coast brought out AD&D I moved to that. I've played many characters, both male and female, and DMed many times. I was sad when Gary Gygax passed on.

That was a sad day indeed.  I've played a few times with the person who introduced me to the game, however after that point everyone has always wanted me to DM.  I'm so BORED of DMing I want to PLAY! Never do I get the chance however

Hey that could be harder than it sounds. Especially since I just moved to an entirely new city where I know NO ONE!  My only friend doesn't want to DM, and the sessions he had with a new DM were unfortunately on Saturdays which I work *sigh*

I love storytelling and being creative and D&D is a way I can do that and provide my friends some enjoyment.

I like the GURPS system more, or at least the idea behind it. Classes make my skin crawl...

I still want to play, but the group I played with is gone. There are a couple groups in the area but my situation at the moments prevents me from getting to them. I think I do like GURPS better, but I have little experience with it, and am horrible at designing stuff for it. I think I just need experience playing it, but it's pretty much impossible for me to find a group that plays it.

Doing it here would be awesome!  Sadly though I don't have a mic.  What exactly is GURPS? Classes don't bother me at all, though you were originally quite limited in your choices of how you wanted your character to be once you chose a class in 3.5 ed. You COULD technically be however you wanted, but not if you wished to "power play" and have your character based on game stats instead of as a RPG type thing.  4th Edition has fixed that however.  Granted 4th edition rules tend to be more combat oriented  more than anything, however I rarely use die to determine anything that happens in a character to NPC conversation anyway... to me THAT is all about how you role play... house rules I suppose

OK, showing my age.

You know, every male character I played always ended up getting a "girdle of sex change"? I never could see why that was supposed to be a cursed item.

Now I can. The thought of a de-transition.... *shiver*.

I only ever played 1 male character oddly enough. Lucian of Blackmoor A.K.A. Luscious Lucian. Elven Fighter.

I've played D&D since "AD&D" was new.
I had a weekly game with friends, an eeeevil DM and a couple of "hamstergnomes" (two short boys who always overcompensated in character creations and would always have truly munchkin'd characters), and a couple of "goths".
My favorite, of all time, characters was a female, human, druid.
She was underpowered, useless in combat, and suffered permanent PMS.
She also had rubbish luck and ended up loosing ALL her gear through "freak" events all of three times... and by ALL I do mean her robes too. Naked Druid!

She was a favorite cause I had to actually think, and take on a "different" role to play her. That and she seemed to stumble around and still survived a trip to the abyss!

Has anyone ever noticed that once you offer to DM once, you're officially the DM until the end of times?

Also, I'm a big proponent of 3rd edition, especially 3.5, and since moving away from my hometown the only people who'll play are complete n00bs.  I decided to use 4th edition because it's so simple a child could use it to ease them into the rules, and we have played 3rd before, and they actually prefer World of Warcraft the pen and paper edition.  Kids these days.

After Lucian, I moved on to my female characters for DnD.  I did have one more male character for as an NPC for a game I ran for my wife... that went no where as it got stalled when she couldn't choose who she loved more, between the two characters in her group. My Characters include:

Shen Raven; Female, Half-Elven, Multiclass Fighter/Sorcerer, Werewolf.

Adrian Nailo (First incarnation); Half-elven, Rogue

Adrian Nailo (Second Incarnation); Elven, rogue

Kat;  Human, Rogue

Seres Victoria; Elven, Fighter

Eric of Greyhawk; Human Wizard

Reverence (Princess Fiora); Tiefling, Warlock

Adrianna Nailo (Final incarnation); Elven, Ranger (Currently at risk of becoming a werewolf, might also be bitten my a vampire.... wonder what'll happen there)

Number 9; Elven, Druid.  Currently not in use, waiting for my wife to DM.  This character has no name currently... no gear either... naked druid lol

Prefer WoW? My god that's horrible... WoW is fun online... on private servers that I don't have to pay for... but DnD all the way.  4th edition is generally kick ass because it doesn't really matter what class you are you still have so many customization options.  My final incarnation of Adrian is a ranger for the purpose of dual wielding, however she's still a thief! I hate being the DM till the end of time... but I always get told my campaigns are the best and no one would compare *sigh*

I call 4th edition the World of Warcraft edition because the rules are all simplified and streamlined to appeal to WoW players' short attention spans.  Also, all the art from the core books for 4e look just like the concept art for WoW.  I hate how races don't have shortcomings anymore, but like how classes get to customize but the loss of skill points is depressing.  4e makes DMing go into automode they made making encounters so easy.  I dunno, I prefer 3rd edition because you get more intimately involved with the characters you create.

4th edition was released WITHOUT DRUIDS! so in my book, the 4th edition core books are blasphemous horrors!
It's part of why I'm happy to DM.. I can go "NO DRAGONIC DUDES AND NO TIEFLING CHARACTERS!"

Druids are out now, and they are more kick assy than ever!  They brought the bard back too sadly.  Although I agree Dragonborn are F'n weird excuses to be slightly dragon like, I don't agree with not allowing tieflings... they're cool!  Well with some slight modifications.. click on the world under my avatar to see my tiefling.. as well as some other things I drew

The last characters I ran were a brother and sister. Aethelredd the Almost-Ready and Fallimae the Fair. Aethelredd was a Paladin who became a hero, got married, was martyred, had a shrine built to him, and then came back from the dead. FAllimae, his younger sister, was a cleric, was not satisfied with being a subservient female, went adventuring, took over a city, and became an oil tycoon.
