P.S. I was wondering if anyone would be interested in playing D&D over MSN or something like that.  Could be fun.  I know typing takes awhile but anyone who had a mic could feel free to use it!

sounds great, who is going to dm it?

who ever it is something you might need

I don't know who would be dming, though I love the idea of the clue bat.  If I get enough players and no one volunteers I suppose I could DM....
  •

shazz

glad you like the bat, I could of done with one when I was DM'ing, I found it and a load of others on a site a few months ago.

I couldn't find any naked druids (female or otherwise), but I did find this.

Use to play table top.  I still would, but myself & the only other person who seems to still be interested can never get a group together anymore.  I don't think I'd play over MSN.  I don't use instant messengers.  They turn 30 second conversations into 30 minute conversations.  So does texting.  It's also generally pretty impersonal to me.

I was wondering how it was going to be run, how for example does the DM plain to solve the character sheet problem?, do we bring our own?, which raises the question of cheating, someone could claim their stats are higher then they are, which could be a problem if you repeat what this kid did at this DnD group I was a member of 20 years ago. He wanted to join the adventure, the DM asked him to role up a character, so he did (4D6 drop the lowest) 18 every stat, we watched in disbelive. He must of used up his luck quota becouse "the dice were against him" didn't turn out to any other meetings after that.

The 30 minute conversation can be solved, we just need some kind of audio link, then we can "chat away" whilst typing.

we can use an online dice rolling tool and a word-based character sheet and send a copy of each char. sheet to the DM for "approval"

I doubt I can play cause of the timezone differences (unless I get kicked out of Iceland.. which solves that)

I rolled up a character with all 18s once before as well.  Anyway stat issues can be solved by using the standard array for all characters.  Another way would be to use the trail version of the character creator provided on the Dungeons and Dragons web site, for the initial write up.  Then you just send the DM the character file and he or she loads it on their computer which then tells them if the character is legal.  I agree a voice link would most likely be mandatory. Online dice roller would solve the die problem as Miniar said.

Would be an excellent way to hold voice school as well. :D

My characters never have 18s.. but they rock none the less, from a roleplay perspective..

when I DM I give "excellent roleplay xp boost" at the end of a play night to those that portraied their characters excellently...

You've got the same problem as I have, the time difference, only I'm in the UK which is something like 4-10 hours in front of the US. If I didn't have my kid brother staying at my place it wouldn't be too much of a problem, he's usually up all night downloading torrents. This slows my conection right down!

The second problem I'll have is my stammer; you won't want to listen me stammering all night, unless you have a play by e-mail, but I've a strong suspicion that will kill the game dead, (to much agro for the person running it, the players will need to communicate with each other to see what their characters are doing before they email what their character are doing).

*bangs head against wall* I just agreed to let a person who's played DnD twice, and who is very creatively... opposite of me help DM.  I did it because I appreciate his enthusiasm and he caught me off guard.  But *sighs* I've failed at keeping control of my game.  How do I deal with this awful, awful situation?
  •

Chaos_Dagger

If you let him continue "Your" story line on his own, then the next time you DM, think of an explanation to inform your players why his section never happened.  Time Paradox? Dreamscape?  There's lots of wonderfully creative ways to pull the game back where you want it without completely denying his style of play.  Your best bet is, to start off continuing along his style and slowly moving everything in the proper direction IN game, so he doesn't feel like a boob, and your players aren't dissatisfied with you just saying "Ok so... that never happened, back to where we were." If however, he was DMing something completely different, then it's easy just to keep your two games as two different universes entirely

Most of my D&D experience has been online, using AIM for it. AIM has a built-in dice roller, though Y!M does have built in voice chat. I personally prefer to only use the voice chat for OOC chatter, though, cause it makes things easier when you can scroll up to double check what was said in regards to the game itself.

There's also some handy programs out there to make online playing easier. I forget the name of the program, but I can ask my roommate about it. There's this one that lets the DM create a map for the players to see, which the DM can reveal as s/he wants to. It also lets each player make custom dice rolling macros for different checks and whatnot to make it quick and easier.

As for the issue of character sheets, we always had the stat rolling done in an AIM chatroom (though that program I mentioned also works for it) with the DM present to see the stats rolled. We also used .doc templates made by the DM (I still have the template, it's very well put together) for character sheets and sent a copy to the DM so s/he'd have it to look at to make sure we're using the right stats and whatnot. It's also pretty detailed so he can be sure we're not cheating.

I really *really* miss playing D&D. ; ;
  •

Chaos_Dagger

I do know the program your talking about,  or one similar.  However, I never was able to get the mapping to work just right :( it's also on my old computer so I know longer have it, or the name.
  •

Princess Katrina

My roommate says the program is Gametable. He got it working, though we didn't use it much. The game didn't last long cause one of the players had to be forcibly removed from my life. >.>

Couldn't we always just form our own WoW guild. I've never played, but that could be easier than piecing together a D&D system.

That is so exceptionally not the same.
