What do you do about filling in forms and job applications? (regarding name and gender)
I hate putting in my female details, but I'm always too scared to put male name and stuff.

I just don't wanna get in trouble or cause any confusion. If I fill in a job application with my chosen name rather than official birth name, are they gonna know?
No one's going to want to hire someone that causes so much trouble just with their application form!

They ask for ID and a social security card. Always use your legal name on legal documents or anything you sign. Other wise it can be a cause of identity theft.

Worst case scenario. You get the job. Later you update your info officially or for security* reasons have to fill out a new app. Because you "lied" on the initial app your terminated/

The *= after 9/11 those with sensitive jobs/ security clearances were required to resubmit apps, than FBI background checks were done. People who had worked for the same company for 20+ years were fired. The answers to drug use and minor criminal offenses didnt match the one from back in the day.

In the US employers should be be submitting your name, ssn and gender marker to Social Security.  If you do not have your legal information on the forms it will come up as a no match which could jeopardize your job.

just so that they also have the name that you go by...then they should ask you what name you want on your nametag...

your best bet is to use your first initial, even if they want your legal name. that way any documents you DON'T want or need your name on don't show up later. TRUST ME, i've been through this, and it just confuses people cuz they don't know what the hell to call you. using your initials is NOT fraud, if they match!! the old man i work with used his FIRST initial only, and goes by his middle name. all documents just say his first initial. put your full name if you want, but in the end, it will probably bite you in the ass. make absolutely sure they know you want to be Kody and nothing else, my employer NEVER asked me what i wanted on my badge until TWO years later. and even then it's still not what i NEED , it's a COMPROMISE!!! take my advice, cuz i recently had to talk to the head of my hr department. i got bit, and i don't want to see it happen to anyone else!!!!

To bad most names are gender specific, unlike Terry, Chris, or even Shannon just to name a few, I can't think of any other gender neutral names although you could always say something like "what can I say my parents wanted a girl" sorta like the boy named Sue

these aren't job applications. and two like i stated earlier initials are NOT false information. my former boss said he'd rather have someone put what they want to be called on the app to begin with.

some do but not all. supposedly mine did but they never ever bothered to ask me till two years later, so just because it's on there doesn't mean they'll honor it.

Which is why it's often best to leave the gender marker blank ... no lies that way.

I think my point was don't lie about your legal status... ultimately you WILL be outed if your gender marker isn't changed.  So best, as you say, to deal with HR after the hire.

In Minnesota they are not allowed to ask your sex on the application.  The only place they can ask it are the EEOC forms, and there the information is voluntary.

Which clearances, which jobs, specifically? It didn't happen like you said where I worked. I first got a clearance in 2000... I didn't need to do another SF-86 until the regular 5-year renewal came up in 2005... in between there was no resubmitting anything.

When I transitioned in 2007, though, they made me do a new SF-86. Apparently a name & gender change is a weightier security issue than terrorists knocking down tall buildings.

since terrorists didn't knock down tall buildings, i suppose that puts your comparison out of perspective.
