Colors are funny, as they mean so many things to so many people, and depending on where you are it could be very, very different.
In SF, where we have a huge Chinese population I sometimes would see brides in full Western wedding dresses, but they were red. Bright Crimson red. I did a touch of research (I asked a few Chinese people I knew till I found one who had some connection to the older ways) and found that in China white is traditionally a color associated with death, while red is the color of joy+luck.
And red was the traditional color for 'hussy' type women in the US and England associated with 'red light'. But since Nancy Reagan and Phyllis Schlafly its also been the color for republican women - as in the Red State/Blue State deal which came later, and I think, may in part have been due to that.
