So, I was wondering if anyone had any methods for voice training.

Let me elaborate.

I am not the most motivated person.  I usually really have to push myself to do something otherwise I just procrastinate it.  So, I am trying to come up with a way to work on my voice that doesn't feel like a waste of time.  I know that I need to work on it, and I know its not a waste of time, but just sitting in my apartment for 'x' amount of time just working on my voice feels like a time waster (if you can understand that).

So, I was thinking that I want to go to Japan for a year after I graduate from college, and just spend some really awesome time there.  What I was thinking about doing was getting something like Rosetta Stone and using that to practice my voice.  This way I am getting to work on my voice and my Japanese.  Does anyone have any experience with doing something like this?

Has anyone else done something similar?

Let me know because I am open to a whole bunch of ideas.

Find a female artist that you like and sing along.  Read out loud and record it for play back.  And if you are going to use the Rosetta Stone for Japanese, record it.

So many women fall into this trap.....they transition their bodies to align with their minds after puberty, then hope for the best with their voice.  What a shame.  The reason that developing a female voice takes so much time, is that you are actually transitioning your voice, much like you did your body.  Yes, you can make a few quick changes to your voice, but for representing your female YOU for the rest of your life.......take the trouble to do the work.

I had 6 months of speech therapy with a professional.

I still have all the notes, exercizes and practices (Electronically) if anyone wants them.

"Marvellous Marvin moves marbles mysteriously around mountains" was a favourite I will never forget.

If no one more worthy claims them and you are giving them away I'd certainly like to have them.

Of course if someone wants to pay you by all means I understand.

I understand what you mean, Bev, but I also understand what Valerie's trying to express.

Whatever you do, Valerie, take heart in knowing that every single hour spent training your voice now will ensure a more comfortable future. The time can seem "wasted" or less than convenient in proportion to right now, but as Bev says, this voice will be you for far longer.

Do take care with singing-heavy approaches, though. I'm a musically inclined person myself and am having some problems moving from speaking/chanting melodically to speaking strictly without. . ."musical focus" I suppose for lack of a better term. I guess this is due to a greater focus in muscle control while singing or maintaining pitch as opposed to speaking.

If you want to try a professional  method of raising your pitch and developing female resonance, together with all the other necessities such as pacing and enunciation, you can try it free on youtube by searching for "tgvoice". Currently there are ten or so videos posted and these are being added to. I've found it useful, but you need to set aside alot of time each day for regular practice, practice, practice, then it starts to come naturally.
