I lived in Seattle/Tacoma and just moved to Houston. I totally thought that almost everyone would be suuuuuper hick and sit on their porch with a shotgun but people down here are insanely nice. Seattle on the other hand is gang ridden and people are as rude as ever. I'm sure it depends on where you go in the south (or north). Just thought it was very interesting.

Having been born and raised in "The South" and having spent many years living there in my adulthood I always found that "insanely nice" to be true in some respects, but rather shocking in others.

It's "polite" to not tell someone to her face what one really thinks about her. But, just wait till she's not in the room. "Nice" at that point often becomes similar to Brutus, Cassius, Decius and Casca with Julius Caesar in the Senate on the Ides of March. Blood flows.

Having someone tell me to my face that they hate me seems a bit more comfortable to me.

O, btw, welcome to the Forum, Briana. :) We try and keep the knives in our robes here.

Hope you continue to enjoy Houston. There are some pretty nice people living there, a few hang out here from time to time. :)

Depends on where you are.  Houston is cosmo/metro area and overflowing with oil money, so I doubt many are sitting on the porch in some areas of town unless the butler is bringing them iced tea.  Other areas of Texas, or even Houston, perhaps not so much.  And sure there are areas of Seattle that are gang infested, other areas where you can't afford to drive though it, much less live there.

And a lot of the politeness of the South is as Nichole said, very much so to your face, Night of the Long Knives when your back is turned.  I know people say New York is rude, and to a degree that's true, but I've always found the people there to be very friendly, and at the very least, they will tell you to your face what they say behind your back.  You know where you stand and no one is wasting anyone's time.
FIGHT APATHY!, or don't...
