LANSING, Mich. - A proposal that would add protections against discrimination based on sexual orientation is pending in the Michigan Legislature.

The House Judiciary Committee heard testimony on the legislation Wednesday but did not vote.

Michigan civil rights law now bans discrimination based on religion, race, color, national origin, age, sex, height, weight, family status and marital status.

The House legislation would expand protections against discrimination in housing and employment to gays and transgender individuals. The legislation is worded so that heterosexuals also would get the same legal protections.
