New York City's Board of Health is reviewing a proposal that would permit transgender New Yorkers to get new birth certificates.

Under the proposal, new birth certificates would be issued to match a person's current gender identity, the New York Daily News said Monday.

Joe Tavar, a spokesman for the Empire State Pride Agenda, called the action great news, "particularly in a post-9/11 world. Anytime you board an Amtrak train or enter a building, you have to provide identification."
