A Question of Representation.

September 18, 2009 by sophiaofthescythes

Is there some reason why the media on discussing Caster Semenya went first of all to the LGBT lobby to get information about intersex people. There are at least four major intersex organizations, and two (OII and AISSG) have representatives in most countries. So what happened?

Perhaps there was more to it than just discussing intersex? So many prejudices seemed to appear in the media at one time. Sexism and possible racism seem to be the most frequent I have literally seen three or four articles on various supposedly liberal websites where they draw comparisons between Caster Semenya and various other female athletes, all of whom seemed to be high cheekboned, swan necked robust but feminine blondes, the consistency of these comparisons does seem to imply that there is some ideal of what some female athlete or probably super woman is supposed to look like. The irony of these comparisons first appearing when questions were asked in Berlin of all places does not escape my notice.
