just a heads up, I was surfing the usual suspects (journal sites) and noticed articles about the next revision of the SOC. it looks to me like a step in the right direction, but i don't know yet... (considering what was proposed for version 6 vs what it became)

FlanKitty, great site! Are you familiar with  the IFGE? http://www.ifge.org/
I kept hearing reference to it and checked it out, now after a few weeks it seems to be a bit slow with stuff, but still has a great deal of info and news, especially in the legislation area.

We're not in the clear as of yet, and it looks like there's trouble brewing.

Yeah, that's for DSM version 5 though, in a way revamping it from its current state is a very good thing, but on the other hand, it could be used to "diagnosis" more issues of mental health then before.  http://arstechnica.com/science/news/2010/01/us-may-have-a-long-term-increase-in-psychological-illness.ars

As far as the SOC, changes to more flexible (informed consent) approach are imho, a very good thing. Yeah, those who should think twice about getting hormone treatment will be able to get it easier with a new model, but the flip side to the argument is they would screw up their life anyways, and it should be their choice to do so. The big benefit is that it (may) make proper diagnosis easier, as well as allow for better post op mental health care. (I don't see surgery requirements getting better soon until society changes its attitude on genital surgery, and legal "costs" added into surgery are dealt with)

Informed consent in regards to SRS would be better.  As would it be if covered by insurance.  By till the time comes that it isn't cosmetic surgery, but life saving, it is really beyond the reach of many.  And this can cause a rise in the suicide rate among Transpeople.

As it has in my case.  Each girl who goes forward with her SRS, depresses me even deeper.  But I hold on to the hope that "One Day".
