Rabbi Joshua Lesser, leader of Atlanta's gay-founded Congregation Bet Haverim, believes it is time for LGBT people to move beyond simply defending their identities from biblically based attacks. As one of three editors of "Torah Queeries: Weekly Commentaries on the Hebrew Bible," he hopes to push such discussions to a new, more complex level.

Most previous books about sexuality and spirituality "are about defending homosexuality, while most of our essays are more about what does this text say to LGBT people," Lesser says.
