Still, it's not so uncommon anymore for people to do what I have done: declare themselves to be transsexuals, live in the opposite gender to which they were previously known, and transition through hormone replacement therapy and gender reassignment surgery. In general, we are accepted. Indeed, the Quebec Charter of Rights protects "transsexuals" from workplace discrimination and such.
Sometimes I wonder, though, if transgender people -- those who choose to live in-between official gender designations and are not transitioning through HRT and GRS -- would get the same reception. Certainly, they would be accepted by Quebec society at large, because the stores clerks and people in the street et al don't know whether one is transitioning or not. Nor do they care. And I have heard stories of MtF transgender people in full femme garb being stopped by police on the roads and being treated with all due respect. Ditto for hassle-free border guard experiences.
