If you've lived in Austin long enough, chances are you have a Leslie story.

It's sort of a rite of passage to have experienced Albert Leslie Cochran, better known as just Leslie, a man who is usually sporting a thong and a tiny skirt, strolling around downtown with his grocery cart.

So after word got out that the 58-year-old eccentric cross-dresser and unsuccessful mayoral candidate was found early Oct. 3, unconscious from a head injury near Oltorf Street and Interstate 35, about 30 people gathered Tuesday night to show their support and wish him well with a vigil outside University Medical Center Brackenridge. Some held burning sage sticks, candles or get well cards and signs for Leslie. Some even dressed like him.
