Smites and applauds are there for you to add or remove Karma from other members in the forums. Applaudes are used to show appreciation towards someone who has helped you, or someone else by providing sound advice, posing important questions, provided important answers, someone who is doing a good job on the site etc. Similarly karma can also be used to show disapproval in the form of smites for a topic, replies, or actions etc.
You can only smite or applaud a forums member once per day and you are required list a reason as to why you have done this. If it is found that you do not have a valid reason the smite/applaud will be disallowed. In the event that the applaud was disallowed it will just be removed from both the person who has given it and the person who received it. If a smite has been disallowed the smite will be removed from the receiver and added to the Karma of the person who gave the smite.
You can change a members karma by clicking either the green or red arrow under a persons information panel to the right of their post. Click the green arrow to applaud some one and the red arrow to smite someone. Please remember that you need to give a reason.

If you go into your profile you can check what karma you have given and received. By whom and what for whether it is an applaud or a smite.
