I want to be a woman...

but I want a very public career, and if I transition I am not sure if my career would be successful. The career comes first in priority... not by much but I live for it.

and to be honest, the woman part is a guarantee with money. My career needs more than money.

We all make choices like this, and then we live with the consequences.

It is possible to have it all, but - speaking in very general terms - you may be happiest if you learn to want what you can have.

Go for the gold, but be happy with the bronze. ;)

I guess you have your answer.

If you think that your career is more important than transitioning, and if you feel that transitioning will make your career unsuccessful, then there is your answer.  Ultimately, it comes down to you and how you feel about things.

I can't say that you will be successful in your chosen career as I am not in the public eye, but I think that you could be at least satisfied in your career before, during and after transitioning.  I have to say that it will probably be harder on your career if you do decide to transition.

Good luck!

Megan you have more to lose than I've had experience in the professional world. If you you boldly go foward is there the risk of a huge fall? Is there any way you can delicately probe for possible answers/reactions from any of your circle of people you trust in your profession without putting it all on the line?

Well It is Possible.  Easy no, but possible.

Success in your career and transition would largely depend on your chosen career. If its a male dominant, testosterone fueled field, then transitioning could be perceived as a thread to the boys club. If it is a more tolerant, acceptable, open field that is made up of a diverse range of people, then it may well go a lot easier than you imagine. Region is also going to play a big role in acceptance.
