Wondering about a "marriage" contract

Shouldn't it be possible for any two people to, by means of the law, form a contract between them that does all that a marriage does legaly. They could even call the contract something like a "Gay Mariage Contract". you could even improve upon marriage and have the contract be different. Like you could choose what portion of your stuff goes to your partner in the event of a breaking of the contract. And you could even specify what constitutes a breaking of the contract.

sounds to me like a prenuptial agreement style contract, nothing new legally, but the application of law in ways not thought of currently is something different (especially where a government or private corporation won't accept the "marriage" in the same way as a "traditional" marriage certificate)

Depending on your lo-cal.  You could spell out everything.  The only thing that could not be covered is taxes, of course.  Unless you claimed them as a dependent, and they did not file.

You could possibly make something BUT it wont answer the fact that a gay partner wont be eligible for any kind of benefits (military/tax/insurances) that a straight couple would get.  It would only cover monetary/items ect.

Then perhaps petitions and preotests should be made for the right to recieve the benifits for those with such a contract, instead of "Marriage". I think such should alienate the right for any religous opposition to be used, which is the prime opposition. Although perhaps money saved is an oppositional motivator as well.
