Well I took the plunge today and went to one of our local fitness centers and took out a one month membership.  I could have taken a longer membership but it would have been a waste of money given that my surgery is in December.  I was a little nervous but the receptionist was really helpful and friendly, and she went out of her way to give me as much information as she could and make sure that I knew all the rules that apply to the club.  She took my picture with one of those 'web cams', and I joked that I wish I could use the picture for my drivers license cause it was a lot better.

The registration process didn't take long and when it was complete I asked where all the facilities were.  As she was by herself at the counter she simply told me to  take off my shoes and wander around and explore a little, so I did.  I went into the women's change room and there were only a couple of women in there doing various things.  There are lots of lockers and benches, washrooms and showers, but I will not be using the showers.  I noticed an area that was a little more private and secluded than the others that I could use.

I then went out and checked out the cardio area, the weight area, and the floor area.  I guess being Sunday it wasn't that busy.  I plan on stopping there on my way home after work, so it is bound to be busier.  It's a big step and I have to admit that I'm very nervous.

Good luck Steph.  I thought of joining a gym myself, but now at my new apartments, I can access everything I need for free.  The thing I would use the most is a treadmill and the one here is acually pretty nice.  I also got some stuff so I could exercise at home.  I'm sure you will do fine in terms of working out there as a woman.  Just try not to build up too much muscle. ;)

I'm afraid that I've lost a huge amount of muscle mass, so I don't thing there is much fear of building muscle :)  I'm looking at maintaining my present weight and toning.

Lucky.  I've been on HRT for like almost 9 months and it doesn't seem like I've lost any. :(

Steph,
I know how you feel. Before my surgery I had joined our community recreation group. It had a pool and weight machines. I went there and into the change room and no one even took a second look. They had privacy stalls where I could change into my work out clothes or my bathing suit. It was real nice. I usually worked out with my bathing suit on and sweats then take a couple of laps in the pool. I would then take a shower with my bathing suit on. I would to my stall and change. It was really strange the first time I went in as some ladies were not modest at all. They never even gave me a second look. It's funny how I felt more at ease, even the first time, in the womans side vs the mens side. I was always self consciencous on the mens side. Now, I'm one of the ladies who is not modest at all. I don't use the privacy stalls and I take my bathing suit off in the shower and wring it out. Like I have said before, I'm not stealth either.

Steph, I'm proud of you babe!  I was right there by your side as you were describing walking into the women's locker room.  It must have seemed like home!  I have been so missing the health club and have thought so many times about what returning will be like, except to the women's locker room.  It's one of the things I think about the most.  I haven't worked out (my choice is swimming) since September '04.  Obviously my choice of workout will require SRS.  I just hope I'm not too far gone by then.

Like Melissa, I haven't seen much in loss of muscle mass and swimming builds the upper body up big time.  Still, I never felt better than when I was swimming regularly.

I'm soooooo jealous!
When you judge others, you do not define them, you define yourself.
