Wow, I haven't been on here in months and walk into a Star Trek discussion.  I'm a fan of all the series although I did feel that DS9 left something to be desired.  With TOS, think of what that show has influenced.  They had these cool computers that actually sat on a desk and these wonderful hand held communicators.  When TOS was on originally we looked at those things and said, "Yeah, not in my lifetime."  BTW, does anyone think it was an accident that the Nextel push to talk phones chirped like the original communicators?

As for Enterprise, I wonder how David James Elliot would have done as Archer?

I have to admit that I enjoyed "Enterprise". I can't quote it and this does NOT make me a part of the club, I just thought it was a good story   :icon_wink:

A lot of people had problems because this film tampered with the original timeline. I can see this view, but I also feel that this is a legitimate (albeit overused) sf convention. The writers of that script were stuck between a rock and a hard place in certain ways. It is difficult to start over again at the beginning and write a good story that still contains surprises but doesn't violate the original timeline. It's quite possible, but I wouldn't expect it from Hollywood--and, obviously, didn't get it.

I'm one of those people who wish that the timeline had stayed intact, but that's not why I found the film disappointing. Parts of it I liked very much. As a whole, I thought it mediocre.

Well I don't really know the greater timeline, but poor Captain ARCHer was always being messed with by time travelling aliens so that has to be worth something. Give the guy a break he has swiss cheese for a brain.

Was there an Enterprise movie? I thought it was just a series and if there was a movie I'd love to see it.

The Great Bird of the Galaxy! Cool!

I once saw him referred to in a news article as the Great Bird of Paradise. I still wonder if it was a mistake or a joke.

I've got a question for y'all.

Did anyone else think that Captain Kirk just looked wrong in the recent movie?

Every other character was recognizable. I just felt they cast Kirk horribly.

Given the normal variation in actors, I thought Pine was fine.

I was also disappointing, now that i think of it, that they didn't do the obvious thing and cast Ray liotta as Captain Pike.

Sure he's too old now but a little hollywood camera magic could fix that.

(I do like Bruce Greenwood in general, btw)

I was fairly happy with Pine but wished he would be a bit more Kirklike in his mannerisms and delivery. Or more Shatnerlike...

Ray Liotta. Sigh. I used to have quite a thing for him. And for Jeff Hunter, too, come to think of it. Maybe I'll rent King of Kings this Christmas.

I would totally wear that top in green or red. Maybe not red, that's risky but green or pink for sure.

I just started watching the show myself on CBS.com.  They only have Star Trek Enterprise, but so far it seems good.  I don't like the Vulcan-captain relationship though :-p.  (I just finished episode 3 today.)

Have you seen any of the older oues? it would be fascinating to find out what someone thought of Enterprise if it were the first Trek they had ever seen.

Gosh, I'm getting majorly into Star Trek: The Original Series at the moment. Prior to that I'd seen one or two episodes of Voyager and liked it, but not enough to dig it out of the internet and watch it. I also watched the recent movie, which sparked my curiosity enough for me to seek out the original and watch it. But honestly, I think it's amazing. Yes, it's cheesy and the effects don't stand the test of time unscathed (remember the fight with the Gorn? Hilarious) but really, it's the ethos of it and the cameraderie of the characters that hook you and keep you watching. Not to mention there are a ton of cultural references everywhere I look that I now get! I never knew there were so many!  :D
With regards to the recent-ish Trek movie I just rewatched it for the first time since watching a load of the original series, the young Spock snogging Uhura everywhere seems illogical (to say the least) and out-of-character (not to mention he spent so much of the movie punching things), and I agree with insanitylives who said the guy they got to play Kirk wasn't quite right. He's too thin and doesn't have that "I own this place and will do it my way or I'm not doing it at all" air that Shatner did. But that's just my opinion, I think he's a good enough actor otherwise. The story wasn't that well-written either (no real moral message, just a load of shooting at Romulans). Despite these gripes though, I enjoyed it. (/rant, sorry!)

I liked the movie (Spock's romance notwithstanding) for what it was but it DEFINITELY didn't have the storytelling chops of TOS.

I doubt, really, that any big budget movie ever will. that's not what folks want from an action film. Something like Doc Oc's moral ambiguity in the Spiderman film is about as deep as you get in that genre.

No, I haven't seen any of the shows.  I have seen some of the movies though, so pretty much everything I know about Star Trek is from them.

You know, pink can be almost like red depending on the shade.

I like anything to do with Star Trek, except for the captain of Voyager.  The actress just seems wrong for that character.

Also, the most underrated thing in Star Trek has to be the movie Nemesis.  That was such an awesome movie for so many reasons, but it got a lot of hate from both critics and fans.

I'm surprised the latest movie (non-cleverly titled only "Star Trek") was received well.  Sure it's entertaining and flashy, but it has less storyline than most regular episodes.  It's almost just a combination of the previous few movies.  As if we haven't already had too many movies and episodes featuring time travel or disgruntled Romulans, now we have both time travel and disgruntled Romulans in the same movie!

Then again, First Contact had a fairly lame premise as well.  The Borg travel back in time to assimilate humanity before humans have the technology to put up a fight.  But at least Alice Krige mad the movie interesting.  She gives me the creeps.

I love just about all things ST. Shows, movies, books... I even have the tech manuals for various Enterprises. lol!! My favorite would probably be Voyager (I think Janway rocked), followed by TNG, OS, DS9 and finally (even below Quantum Leap) would be Enterprise.

Anyone ever been to the old Star Trek Exhibit in Vegas? It was *totally* awesome!!
