LAHORE: The Punjab government has decided to conduct medical examinations of transvestites registered with the government after reports surfaced that "impostors" were getting themselves registered with the Social Welfare Department to receive the financial assistance reserved for transvestites.

An official of the department told Daily Times on Thursday that transvestites had some misgivings regarding registration, which made them hesitant to approach the government.

He said the registration aimed at providing financial assistance between Rs 5,000 and Rs 10,000 from the Baitul Maal to transvestites. He said while many impostors had registered themselves to receive the assistance, a large number of transvestites were yet to be registered.

The article mentions transvestites, transgenders and eunuchs, but since authorities are contemplating a physical examination to determine eligibility, doesn't this translate (in Western terms) as eunuchs/hijras and transsexuals?

According to XE.com, 5000 Pakistani rupees is worth just over $59 (US).
