At the closing of the year I – like so many other writers – like to look back on the year that was, and offer my own assessment of what the last 12 months were all about. Indeed, it happens so often at this time of year as to make it a bit of a cliche, but so be it.

For myself personally, I felt that 2008 was bad enough, and that maybe 2009 would be a turnaround year. Little did I know just how bad things could get. Beyond my own experience, however, I feel the transgender community has grown considerably this year – and with this visibility has come greater challenges.
