Actually if you RTFA you'll find that the mistakes could have been in the opposite direction, i.e. it lost by even more.

But, the distance between exit polling data and actual election counts have been off for over a decade and a half now, and growing wider each time, so it's more likely to see the fault laying in the exit polling, not the voting machines.

I did read the article and I thought the analysis was correct in that the results for Prop 8 are out of line significantly to warrant an investigation. That electronic voting machines have a serious flaw in that the results can easily be changed. The owner of the major company that makes them is a die hard republican. He has made statements that some attribute to being able to change election results in the conservative's favor.

It would be great if they were to have to have the election over.  I know the apathy factor would be gone.

However, the real problem here is the lack of any real proof.  Exit polling is just that.  It is not an election ballot.  All that can be proven is that people answered the exit poll a certain way. 

Further, if it is ever taken to court, the objectives of the poll would certainly be called into question.

The purpose was not only to collect demographic data (gender, age, race, and party affiliation) for election analysis, but also to reach a large enough sample of voters at the polls to verify (or question) the official results. In Los Angeles, four ballot propositions (as well as the presidential election and some local contests) were included on the questionnaire handed to voters.

Unfortunately, I see this as a no-go because it does not really appear to be unbiased.

So given a discrepancy between the actual votes, and the exit polls you're believing the exit polls?  Even though we know that since the 1980's more people have refused to answer such questions (I will not), and that we have demonstrable proof that people will often lie and take the more PC position in public when they voted the other way in private.

Really, if they could have (and I think they can) changed the vote, they were more interested in changing it on Prop 8, but let the vote for Obama go through?  Somehow you're going to have to convince me that a ballot issue, that everyone knows, regardless of the outcome, was going to come up again, and again, and again, was more important than the election of the President?  Sorry, that does not compute.

The problem is that we really cannot audit elections and the ones who make and control the machines seem to change results. Frankly, I don't know what we can do about this.

We can, and should, insist on paper ballots.  Its the only way, and even then there can be fraud.

The one thing that makes sense to me is that based on the election fraud complaints of the 2004 election, only races or ballot issues that are close will be susceptible to this kind of fraud. Obama was running too far ahead and California was never considered a swing state in the election so fraud was concentrated on state issues. Since we know that considerable outside interests such as the Mormon church paid millions to alter the results, it seems likely that some tampering was also paid for.
