I haven't been paying too close attention but for what it's worth....
They're putting in mandatory filters in AU ISPs.
There will be two filters. One you CAN opt out of that blocks everything not suitable for kids, and one you CANNOT opt out of that blocks anything the government deems "unsuitable for public consumption".
They want to regulate it in the same way they regulate with classifications for TV. They do not want to allow content through that would be rated anything over an MA 15+
There's a way around everything if you have the know how. I'm not too concerned about it. It's been given to the lowest bidder, after all.
Though I do think it's a waste of taxpayer money that could be better spent on roads, schools, hospitals, etc. You know... things that will REALLY "benefit the children" instead of this unfunny joke.
They keep trying to spring crap like this on us every two years or so. This isn't the first internet censorship scare we've had. Usually it all just fizzles out when the next election comes along. I'm surprised this one has gone on so long, actually.
