Spiro alone?

Is it ok to take spiro without taking estrogen?

What are the benefits/risks?

Can you still maintain an erection (if you want one) while taking Spiro?

Well, I'm just talking spiro, my endo says it is fine. In fact I think it is easier on the body than estrogens, especially in pill form.

Without E some people experience a lot of fatigue (I havn't, except for the first couple weeks). One of the main concerns is that estrogen and testosterone seem to play a part in maintaining bone density. So in theory just talking spiro alone can increase your risk of osteoperosus. I think this is the main concern - though my endo did not think it was much of an issue.

I can get it up fine on spiro. My libido is much lower, well maybe not lower, just very different (you need a change in mindset I think). I want different things out of sex now. I don't think about it as much. I don't have morning errections, or involuntary ones for that matter. Definitly can cause erectile dysfunction in some people though.

benefits for me - less likely to become permanantly sterile, chances are I can still conceive a baby while on it, helps reduce or stop male pattern baldness, reduces body hair, reduces muscle mass, some minor breast growth.

the other issue is you can only really expect mild feminisation on its own.

hope this is helpful

Hey there Laura,

I asked pretty much the same question a while back just before I started on Spiro without Estrogen. I got a lot of good responses there you might want to check out:

As for my own observations...

I was on Spiro alone for almost a year before I started Estrogen. The benefits I experienced were noticeable, but mild.

  • My sex drive went way down, though it took a while for this to happen and it didn't go entirely away.
  • Erections were still possible.
  • I got some breast development, but not a lot.
  • The rate of hair growth all over my body slowed down, though it didn't really change the pattern (i.e. I didn't lose any hair in the places guys are supposed to have hair, nor did it change from dark to light).
  • I did get some softening of my overall appearance, but again fairly mild.

I didn't really notice much of a downside, other than more frequent urination. The doctor told me there is a risk of causing high potassium levels with Spiro, but I didn't really adjust my diet or anything and I have not seen an elevation in potassium in my case.

The thing is, it's just a world away from the effect of estrogen plus spiro. Estrogen is like a gender booster rocket. Spiro is more like a plucky little gender go-cart. Both move you forward, but at vastly different rates. That's my take anyway.

I had incredible lethargy and bone pain from taking spiro without estrogen, even at smaller than HRT doses. And I was only 23. I started growing breasts and I don't know if the spiro affected my sexual function because I was for the first time working out sexual issues with a partner at length. It didn't make me less horny at least.
