Director Madsen Minax's documentary Riot Acts: Flaunting Gender Deviance in Music Performance delivers exactly what it promises in its subtitle. A thorough examination of what it means and requires to be transgender or gender-variant performer in the public sphere, Riot Acts features artists such as Ryka Aoki and Adhamh Roland talking about their art and their experiences, without presenting them using conventional gender labels. This approach lends itself to a more authentic and open discussion by the performers about the many processes involved in transitioning, and how gender-variant musicians are affected by involuntary public politicalization. Riot Acts screens at 6 p.m. at Left Bank Books' downtown location (321 North Tenth Street; 314-436-3049 or www.left-bank.com). A question-and-answer session with the film's producer, Simon Strikeback, follows. Admission is free, but donations are welcome.
