Joanne Herman, 56, a long-time advocate for transgender awareness, says she decided to write a book on the topic after discovering that many misconceptions about what it means to be transgender still exist today. Herman—who began transitioning from male to female in 2002 and who underwent sexual reassignment surgery one year later—has detailed her experiences in Transgender Explained For Those Who Are Not. The book, which was published by AuthorHouse™ in September 2009, grew out of a series of columns that were originally featured on The Advocate's Web site.
