Hello all! I've been doing a bit of research, but I'm having some trouble finding a good answer. A few years ago I went to a therapist (the only one I could afford that knew ANYTHING about TG people) to get a kick start with my physical transition. Now I'm living pretty darn close to full time and feel as if I am ready for T. I've done my research on what it may/may not do to me. I know the positives, the negatives, pretty much everything one can know about testosterone. Since I do not have a job, I figured now is the perfect time to start my physical transition. I can go on T, work as male, pass as male and possibly be a bit happier.

My issues are that I don't know where I could go for an endocrinologist in my area that is both knowledgeable and works on informed consent. I have been told that there is a clinic about 3 hours from my home which has a therapist and endocrinologist. There are a few issues with that situation. I have a lot of doubts around therapists giving me the okay because I'm not 100% sure of my identity. I know I am either a man or gender queer and would feel more comfortable in my own skin if it was physically more masculine/androgynous. If I were to go to that clinic I would have to see a therapist for around 4 sessions before seeing the endocrinologist.

The problems are transportation (it would take a lot of time and money to get to the clinic), and the fact that I would have to see a therapist again. If there is anybody in the NYC/Long Island area that knows of an endocrinologist that works off informed consent, please tell me.

You would be unusual if you were 100% sure.

Of course you have doubts. But you decide what you want to do and take each step.

I get the feeling that, one of the problems for many people, are the huge number of alternatives to choose from.

Gender queer, bisexual, homosexual, heterosexual, asexual, androgynous to name a few.

Perhaps you can forget all those and decide what you want from your life. It really doesn't need any other labels than legal, your choice and your life.

How about Callen-Lorde Community Health Center?
They do not take my insurance...I've been told that they only really care if you have the money.

I'm not entirely sure about what you're getting at...

I'm not sure what you mean by "informed consent". I'm quite certain what it means in my profession, but maybe it means something different in yours. Can you please explain?

An endocrinologist will prescribe hormones without "the letter" is informed consent.

I'll clear my throat for an answer one last time before letting this just fall into pages nobody looks at.

if you have a planned parenthood nearby they may be able to help. They do the informed consent from what I hear. Call and check.

They can prescribe T?

It varies from location to location, but yeah. The one where I live does. So it's worth a shot to give them a call and ask some questions, also go on the site and it'll give you a basic over view of what services of what they offer. Like I said, it's worth a shot.

Nygeel, there must be some trans groups in your general area. Can you get in touch with them and ask the same question?

The closest one that I know of is about 2 hours away. When I was looking for therapists in the area they all referred me to the LGBT center who said "you know you don't absolutely NEED a therapist" the center sent me some places but they were all 2 hours or more from where I live. I just can't drive/take public transportation that far since I'm unemployed.

Lemme ask you something. Do you have enough money for the endo and the first vial of T? If so, you might need to keep saving up for transportation. If not, then gas money is the least of your troubles at this point.

I hope you find someone closer than three hours away, but you might not. In that case, you might need to tighten your belt even further to get what you want. Or wait until you are working, which is exactly what you are trying to avoid. It makes sense to start transition now and get the awkward androgynous stage out of the way before you go back into the work force. It might not be feasible, but it is a good idea.

Have you tried calling the two clinics you know about? You might ask them if they know of someplace closer to you. The LGBT center might not be as "in the know" as they should be. Also, I have found that in my city, real trans people tend to know about resources that the LGBT center is unaware of. That's why I suggested support groups and networking. If there is any support group at all in your area, check it out. It sounds like there isn't. (Edited: I made an oops. Can you e-mail someone in the group, maybe? Get a contact?)

Before I knew what my local informed consent clinic was called, I remember Googling for it. I was using keywords that didn't turn up what I was looking for. Once I knew the name of the place, I went to their site and looked at their own description of the services they were providing. Nowhere do they use the term "informed consent." The trans clinic operates by word of mouth, really. So I suggest that if nobody comes up with a name/clinic that is close to you, you start doing some legwork--that is, phone work. Find out about any endocrinologists who work with TG/TS people, and start making phone calls. Also, would it be possible to get a letter from the therapist you used to see, or is that out of the question?

Forgive me if I'm suggesting things you have already tried, but you might need to get creative. I'm just throwing things out there.

Sorry I'm not so helpful.

P.S. I found a list of endos in NY state...I'll PM it to you. But I am not familiar with NY state and don't know how far away all of these places are. I suspect that you've already ruled these people out due to their location.  :(

I received a message from a friend of mine (doesn't live in the area, but no matter) who confirmed that the planned parenthood near him also does T.

The one near me does say they offer LGBT services, and I think I have enough cash saved up that I could head over there for my yearly and ask. I've got my fingers crossed and everything!

Now, I know that a lot of people require a letter, but I think I might be able to work around that a bit...since I have been living what I consider "close to full time" for a long while now, I've got plenty of friends that would confirm my living as male. Some of them are social workers that I've gone to counseling with soooo I'm thinking that should be enough?

I sure hope so, Nygeel. Best of luck to you. Keep us posted.
