Isn't "true Christian" (or "true Hindu," or "true woman," or "true American," or "true vegetarian...") a myth?

It seems to me that everyone goes at these things in their own way. All too often, the idea of a "true" this or that is just an excuse for people to put each other down.

Actually - I agree with you.

My definition of "true Christian" is one who remembers the teaching to love each other, not judge each other or reject anyone on background, that kind of thing. Something my vicars exercised brilliantly when I spoke to them, even though they didn't understand what this is really about. But in the main, yes, we all interpret it slightly differently, be it religion or even gender. I've never seen myself as butch or whatever, but I still identify as a bloke.

Hey, that's a good one: All trans-men are butch :P

Myth: All transsexuals aspire to become Jedi Knights.

This is not true. Some of us aspire to become Sith.
Seriously though I must not turn to the Darkside but hey give me the chance to use Force lightning and I just may turn.

Lol.

Also: FTMs don't all transition for the male privilege.
Surgeons cannot just "make a penis." (I wish lol)
Not done for amusement/curiosity generally.

Fact: It can happen to anyone.

Myth:TG's are just like the people you see on Oprah, Springer etc.

Fact: TGs are just human beings who want to live as one.

You can not "try this out", it's not easy, it's not simple, and it's not fair.

Myth: Tg's are mythical creatures who are about as real as a fictional story character. You can treat them like dirt and they won't get hurt b/c remember... they're not real! Oh and they wear huge wigs that you could hide birds in, all like neon pink, fishnets, and listen to nothing but Madonna and disco music.

Fact: We are indeed flesh and bone. Translation: real. We have feelings just like everyone else does. We also have dreams, aspirations, and are highly f*n intelligent :)

Some myths might include: the idea that all MTFs are overly emotional and loose it in a crisis, that they are very shallow and superficial and can only talk about hair, makeup and fingernails and what Spears and Lohan have been up to lately, the worst of all - that it's ok to hit a TS because after all they are really men and should be able to take a punch.

Myth: I transitioned specifically to hurt YOU and make YOU miserable.

Myth: If you haven't been gender dysphoric since earliest childhood, you're not a real transsexual.

Myth: "Straight" Transsexuals are not real transsexuals and are just transitioning because they want to look like the women/men they are attracted to.
Fact: Just as genetic men and women can identify as a gay or lesbian so can transpeople. Also it is ignorant and rude to call a transwoman who likes woman or transman who likes men straight, because you are linking their sexuality to their birth sex and not the gender they feel they are.

Myth: Transsexuals only transition for attention.
Fact: You mean negative attention? Like discrimination, harassment, physical abuse? And lets not forget lost friends, and the risk of your relationships and family life falling apart. Transsexuals don't want this attention (and anyone who would needs to get their marbles in check). They want to live and be accepted as the person they are on the inside.

Myth: Transwomen all die their hair bizzare colors, get piercings all over and cover themselves in tattoos and dress very provocatively.

Myth: Transwomen all want to be/ or are drag queens or butch lesbians.

Myth: TGs are just sexual deviants and child molesters

Myth:  ->-bleeped-<- is a proven fact and explains everything about transsexuality.

Actually, I think the term myth isn't strong enough, I think the term "Outright, baldfaced, lie!" comes close, but there may be more descriptive terms...

Looks like a lot has already been mentioned, but I'll say it anyways, they really bother me

Myth: It's ok for someone who hardly knows you to ask about your sex life, your genitals, you favorite colour, whatever, just because you're a transsexual.

NO NO NO! Only people close to me can consider asking me this stuff, even then it's really none of your god damn business! You'd find it rude, well we're people too and it's rude to us also!

Myth: Transsexuals can't be gay/lesbian.

Gender has nothing to do with sexuality, completely separate. I'm a girl that likes girls, just like any other girl can be *gasp* mind-boggling I know.

Myth: Bisexual just means you're confused.

Myth: Yeah. I've heard that too. Um, I don't know, I just like both some of the time you know. But it's cool, whatever.

Myth: My brothers are gay and they told me that so it must be true.

Myth: Oh hi, I'm gay too and I also think nobody can be bisexual because I'm %100 gay. Never had a straight fantasy, not me, nope never. If you're bi, you're either closeted or confused for sure. I'm gay of course so I have a very informed opinion about this.

Myth: Yeah that's cool, I understand. I mean like everyone can have their own opinion or whatever. I don't care.

This thread just reminded me of something my electrolyses said to me, "I not the typical transsexual." I had to laugh, we get on really well so I asked what did she mean, she said "well, looking like men in a dress, man's voice." that's a myth I said. There's no such thing as a typical transsexual.

Now where's my pink nail polish, pink lip stick, pink shoes and pick dress,

Myth: Transgender is the result of absense of a father figure, and/or childhood sexual abuse.

What I believe to be the Fact: This happens to so many people that the world would have many, many more transfolk if it were the case.
