For two years, Rea Carey has helped direct the gay rights movement. As executive director of the National Gay & Lesbian Task Force, she not only heads the nation's oldest such group, but has watched as the movement has moved from Washington- and New York-top-down control to bottom-up activism, thanks to the social networking.

Carey herself brings a lifetime of activism, on the street and behind the scenes, to her job. She was one of the heavy hitters in ACT-Up and OUT, another direct action group. She helped establish the lesbian program at the Whitman-Walker Clinic in Washington, D.C.; Gay Men and Lesbians Opposing Violence; and the National Youth Advocacy Coalition.

In a freewheeling interview, Carey told EDGE what she expects in the coming months on key issues such as Don't Ask Don't Tell and marriage equality, as well as encouraging shifts in public opinion and even in the Republican Party.
