ACP: Schools should not affirm students' perceived sexual orientation

http://www.catholicnewsagency.com/news/acp_schools_should_not_affirm_students_perceived_sexual_orientation/

Gainesville, Fla., Apr 10, 2010 / 08:02 am (CNA).- In a recent letter sent to school superintendents throughout the country, the American College of Pediatricians (ACP) cautioned that it is "not a school's role to 'affirm' a student's perceived personal sexual orientation." The ACP also said that "rigorous studies" show that children and adolescents who initially experience gender confusion or same sex attraction no longer do so by the age of 25.

On March 31, ACP president Dr. Tom Benton wrote to schools across the U.S., saying that he and his staff are "increasingly concerned" that "many cases and efforts to help students who exhibit same sex attractions and/or gender confusion are based on incomplete or inaccurate information."

And while there is undoubtedly some truth in this I have no doubt that it will also be misinterpretted by the bible belt bigots as giving support not only for remaining NEUTRAL but actively discouraging and persecuting anyone who dares to be different.

What I seriously would like to know is what the heck is up with all your American physicians? From the point of someone from europe a lot of them sound like really difficult and reactionary people to have to deal with. We had things like that under Thatcher with clause 28 but that was back in the mid 80's for heaven sake! The world has moved on surely.

To me this just seems like another version of the DSM all over again, more proof that your medical thinking on the whole field of human sexuality is seriously stuck back in the last century almost to the point of complete ridicule! I'm genuinely surprised that the American LGBT community doesn't, so far, seem particularly angry. If someone had tried doing this today in most parts of western europe believe me by now various people would be threatening all sorts of protests, boycotts and direct action against it.
