Missoula City Council Adopts Anti-Discrimination Ordinance

Missoula will be the first town in Montana to say no to discrimination against trans-gender people or people with gender identity issues. It took the city council well over four hours of public comment and heated debate to vote to approve an ordinance against discrimination. Many in the crowd stood to show their support for passage of the ordinance. Co-sponsor Dave Strohmaier said he couldn't be happier.
"I think this is something we can definitely take pride in as the city of Missoula."
Strohmaier thinks Missoula is leading the way for other cities across Montana. Adding "We're making a strong statement that you cannot discriminate against someone based on their sexual orientation."

The ordinance applies to the housing market and also protects GLBTs from workplace discrimination.
The measure was approved by the city council 10-2, reported local newspaper The Missoulian on April 13.

It will go into effect 30 days after adoption, typical for city ordinances, but that won't be the end of the effort to ban discrimination in Montana for people who are gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender.

"Most of us can't remember civil rights in action," said Councilwoman Stacy Rye, an ordinance sponsor, during the wee hours of the morning. "This is it for us. This is our lifetimes."
