I am going to start by saying I don't know if this is the appropriate location for this discussion, if not, could one of our esteemed (and awesome) mods put it where it should be. Thanks!

Okay, back to the subject. I have been invited to talk to a college "Civilizations & Arts" class about transgendered topics - specifically my own (limited) experiences. Seeing as how it is a class related to different civilizations around the world, I was hoping to gather some information about how other cultures, countries, governments, people, etc perceive and treat transgendered people as a whole, or transsexual people specifically. Also, if there are certain terms/names used in these places for trans persons I would appreciate your sharing. Also, if you post terms/words/names if you could also indicate if it is considered a derogatory or supportive word.

I know about the situations in Iran (and I think Afghanistan) where transsexuals are tolerated, but that homosexuals (male only?) are required to undergo transition (paid to some extend by the government) in order to be perceived as a binary couple.

I know that in the UK there is a system in place in the health care system that provides care - though with many contentions. Not sure how we are accepted in those various countries.

I welcome any input you may offer and am very interested to hear all stories - good and bad. Thank you,

Deanna
