QDoc 2010: Documentary festival features real stories, and the people who live them

A relatively new festival has joined the June mix with QDoc, Portland's queer-documentary film festival, which begins its fourth edition Thursday for a four-day run at Clinton Street Theater in Southeast Portland.

Because there's plenty of diversity within the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered community, there are plenty of bases to cover when assembling a festival lineup. On the surface, QDoc looks like a grab bag: There's a political film, a portrait of older lesbians who've seen it all, a tell-all from a triumphant transsexual and bios of influential literary and pop stars. But what keeps the festival from being a contextual free-for-all is the quality of what's presented, plus the chance to ask questions of many of the filmmakers and documentary subjects. A number of this year's films are so powerful they'll intrigue any documentary fan, whether they fit into a particular niche or not.
