Today, acceptance of gays and lesbians is at unprecedentedly high levels. Same-sex marriage is legal in several states, and was, briefly, in California. Congress is preparing to allow openly gay men and lesbians to serve in the military. In 1977, San Francisco Bay Area filmmakers Nancy Adair, Andrew Brown, and Rob Epstein interviewed hundreds of openly gay men and lesbians, and culled 28 of them for a revolutionary documentary about their lives, Word Is Out – Stories of Some of Our Lives, which has just been released in DVD. The changes since then are extraordinary.
