I agree that they should have spent a bit more time on the differences between Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity. However I enjoyed the show very much, I identified greatly with Kimberly Reed, especially how she talked about how fear made her make poor decisions.
I am inspired by her confidence despite the fact that those around her seem to have a bit of trouble letting go of her High School days, as she said she wanted to make peace with that time not relive them, but her brother and friends cannot seem to let go of that period in her life. Sadly, I have several friends that are much the same way, constantly talking about what we did 10 years ago, why must society fetishize high school so much? In any case her time in college seemed much more helpful to her and interesting.
