Today I ventured out for the first time dressed 'en femme'. I am on a couple of weeks leave, so thought, 'why not'.
I made sure I had shaved well, put on mascara and eyeshadow, painted my nails, and some basic foundation. I dressed casual in jeans and polo, with a motorcycle jacket. Jewellery limited to a watch, earrings and necklace.
As an old back injury is playing up I took my motorcycle rather than the car, so I felt fairly safe until I took my helmet off in the shopping mall underground carpark. First shock was bad case of 'Helmet Hair' but I remembered to bring a brush so it was fixed fairly quickly. Nobody stared as far as I could tell.
Once inside I tried to look as confident as possible, and walked through the mall to 'Bras n Things'. Didn't see a single person give me a second look.
A woman being served glanced in my direction, but paid no further notice, and the girl behind the counter treated me like any other woman customer, asked if I had been fitted recently, and helped me choose a set of silicon bra inserts, and an extender strap. She spent some time also pointing out various other special offers etc. I will definitely be a regular customer there in future. I was over the moon!
I also went to the supermarket and bought the papers. Again the assistant took my appearance in her stride, so I can only conclude that either people in this town really don't care what you look like at all, or I passed convincingly.
Either way, I feel really content, as well as excited. I have 2 more weeks to experiment, so it will be interesting to see what happens. After 50 odd years of doing what others want, it is good to be able to do what I need.
