The proposal to protect Memphis city government workers from being fired on the basis of sexual orientation, gender identity or gender expression is among the first steps to make Memphis a welcoming, inclusive community where creative, innovative people will choose to work and live.

On Tuesday, the ordinance proposed by City Councilwoman Janis Fullilove will be considered on the first of three readings. The ordinance is based on the principle that all people should be able to earn a living, provide for their families and contribute to their communities without fear of being treated unfairly in the workplace. Right now, employees of the city of Memphis can be fired for being lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender.
