The problem with reputation is that, once people get a few negatives they sometimes seek to generate these as a sort of identity.

That can lead to two camps, the hollier than thou and the wolves, looking for bait.

You give good rep if you think the person did a good post or bad rep if not.

In my experience rep leads to alot of bitching  :-\ On another forum I used to go on it caused alot of arguments.

We enforce a reputation policy and review the logs regularly.

We do not allow people to play games with the reputation system on this site. What we prefer is that if you feel a post was extremely helpful, or contained useful information  then you should applaud the user. If you feel that a post violated the rules or spirit of the site then you smite. Be warned smites are considered hostile and must be justified. I can promise you that any user abusing smites will not do it more than once, and the smite will be removed anyway.

It is not optional, however if you don't like it, don't use it.

Now you can read more on the reputation rules at: https://www.susans.org/forums/index.php/topic,18960.msg146855.html

The only reason it was disabled previously was due to a problem with the reputation logging software which has since been fixed. You can review the reputation stats and if you feel someone got undeserved reputation notify Nero or myself.

Anyone can review the reputation logs at https://www.susans.org/forums/index.php?action=viewkarma

Yeah but you can't stop other people using it against you. If someone has an opinion that is different to you it's just that an opinion. To me that can get in the way of the intended use of it. You can't moderate how people will use it... not unless you check every single click and then question each users intentions and motives for every single click they make.
I just think there should be an option in our profiles to select whether we have one or not. But I know that won't happen *sigh*.

Once again no one is going to get away with abusing smites. It's not gonna happen. Other than that it's a subjective number.

Here's some of the opinions on staff on the plus's of the system.

QuoteWell I liked the karma system because it was a great way to highlight some of the best posters (meaning: most supportive and helpful to others) by upping their karma.

I really think it made people feel good to know their posts were beneficial to someone.

I also think it eliminates a lot of one liner posts, because people have a way to say 'well put' or 'I agree' without making a post.

Based on previous experience the system was more of a positive influence rather than a negative one. Concerns mirrored the ones posted here but they were in the minority on this issue. If a problem develops I will review the system and make adjustments at that point.  But as long as we monitor the system then it is not going to be able to be abused.

But why can't it be optional? If people express interest in not wanting to be a part of it shouldn't that be considered? Not just concerned that person using it but also having votes given to them?
Could it still function being an option?

It's not optional, that's all there is to it.

That's the end of discussion on this topic. Again if there is an issue with abuse of the system, feel free to contact me or Nero via pm on it. Otherwise it's not a topic for discussion on the public forum.

Related Topics turned on. If matched the forums will show 5 topics at the bottom of a thread that it feels may be related to the topic you are viewing. It seems pretty good so far.

Just wanted to say that the site is working great :) I've occasionally run into a database error but usually by the time I refresh the page it is fixed. Way better than any other forum I've been on. Probably a stupid question but can someone explain how to give rep? I checked the two links you posted Susan, I just don't understand the how to part. Sorry if the question is posted in the wrong place.

You need 50 posts to give Reputation.  On a user's post you should see a thumbs up and thumbs down. Click them

it looks like ALL the ticker thingies are missing on everyone's account now.  :(

In addition, I'm suddenly unable to see any images posted to the forums.. Avatars/Profile Pics show just fine, but anything external fails to display. I've done all the usual maintenance on my end, and other sites work fine..

I'm unable to award Rep either.. I've never seen the thumbs..

New format was OK until they shrunk it. Now I have to enlarge it every time I log in.

Oh wow!  I just noticed too that ALL photos people have posted in any thread, are gone.  Woa........

Is it still this way for you? Yesterday (The day you posted this) I posted some pics in the photo sharing thread in just for us, and it previewed fine and shows fine to me, and it still does today. In fact I can see everyone's pictures in that thread.

If you can't see that stuff now, perhaps there are some profile specific settings that need to be fixed?

@everyone:
I haven't had any trouble with errors on the site so far on my computers (Ubuntu 9.04 Firefox, Ubuntu 9.10 SeaMonkey, Debian Testing IceApe). The only real complaint I have is that Japanese text is nearly unreadable under my profile pic on my 1024x600 screen, but it looks alright on my 1366x768 screen, it also looks alright when posted into a signature or post, so that is no big deal.

P.S. Does the Gallery no longer exist?
