Pedro Jones, 20, was Roy Jones's babysitter and his mother's boyfriend, but is otherwise no relation to either. While the infant and his family were part of the Shinnecock Indian Reservation in Suffolk County, Long Island, Pedro Jones was not.
Roy A. Jones died of cardiac arrest. According to New York State Police, this was caused by Pedro Jones hitting the child "several times throughout the body with closed fists." Jones has pleaded not guilty to first-degree manslaughter charges, arguing that he "never struck that kid that hard before."
