Just came out on Facebook (FtM)...

Alright, so my family and close friends have known for a while...but recently, I changed my facebook profile picture to reflect my gender identity. (It has me with short hair and wearing masculine clothing). A lot of friends that I haven't seen since high school have been asking me a ton of questions. Some I find to be quite offensive. For example: "Why are you doing this to yourself?"

Is this a pretty normal reaction to get from friends? Are they trying to be insensitive or do they just not know any better?

They probably do just not know better.  They're happy with their sex, and the idea of changing it disgusts them so much that they can't imagine why anyone else would want to do it.
Have you thought about linking some TG-related reading on your Facebook?  It might help your friends understand better.

I did the same thing.. over the course of a month I deleted all fem pictures, changed my gender to male, changed my name, 'liked' a bunch of things like testosterone, transgender rights.. etc... uploaded only masculine pics...

made it blatantly obvious.. and no one noticed. 🙁 I've been having to go through my friends lists and tell people.. but everyone is super cool about it.

I went about 'liking' stuff like gender issues, keeping an up-to-date photo with girlier hair and even changed my profile gender for a week without realising how that would impact upon my news feed. A couple of people had suspicions and did confront me about it later, but after placing a 'coming out' note up to my friends list last night I'm now getting messages along the lines of, "oh, I meant to ask you about that!"

I'd suggest that if nobody seemed to you to notice, they may really just have been keeping quiet. It may have seemed an insensitive or premature thing to ask about.

They either don't understand or they're not very good friends. It's not the reaction I've gotten so far, but I've been very lucky. Good friends will take the time to listen to you, so give explaining a shot since there isn't much you can tell at this point.

nah.. as I've being going through my friends list.. people didn't notice or thought it was a joke.. lolz. It's all good, no ones been shocked anyhow.
