The venerable Degrassi franchise — which began 30 years ago with the Kids of Degrassi Street after-school series before graduating to Degrassi Junior High and Degrassi High in the classic late-'80s incarnations, followed by the post-millennial Next Generation reboot — has become one of Canada's biggest exports alongside hockey players, Celine Dion and BC bud.

Degrassi again forges new ground with this week's two-parter (beginning tonight) "My Body is Cage," which reveals that new classmate Adam (Disney Channel vet Jordan Todosey) is transgendered — not a lesbian, but a boy trapped in a girl's body. It's a vital distinction most teenagers are likely unaware of, and which is portrayed in a clear and powerful manner.
